Chautaugua in Richfield
July 31 to August 4, 1923
Chautauga was the first adult education program in the U.S. It was very popular in rural communities throughout the country. They would pitch a tent and spent several days presenting entertainment in the form of lectures, concerts, and plays that were modeled after activities at the Chautauqua Institution of western New York.
Alta Johnson Howard (deceased) was a young mother at this time and was so excited when Chautaugua was scheduled to come. She longed for education and culture. This is a copy of the program she saved from thd 1923 Chautaugua in Richfield!
Chautaugua flourished in the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries..
